INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - THE SPICE OF LIFE

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Today, consider looking through an old photo album to bring back fond memories of the past.  Then, go out and take more to make new ones.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"Nature does nothing uselessly." ~ Aristotle

FUN FACT OF THE DAY:
Salt isn't just for cooking and seasoning meals.
  • To test the freshness of an egg, place it in a cup of water with two teaspoons of salt.  A fresh egg will sink and a bad egg will float.
  •  After peeling apples, pears, or potatoes, place them in a bowl of cold, lightly salted water to prevent them from browning.
  • Scour iron pots and pans with salt to remove grease and grime.
  • Remove coffee and tea stains from mugs by rubbing them with water and salt.
  • Improve the taste of our favorite coffee by adding a pinch of salt to the brew to reduce bitterness.
  • Rub tarnished silverware with salt and water for a great shine.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS...

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Today, find just one thing to like about yourself.  It makes finding more things to like about yourself tomorrow easier.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“Determine that the thing can and shall be done, and then we shall find the way.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

FUN FACT OF THE DAY:
Lemons aren't just for making lemonade:
  • Got a sore throat or bad breath?  Gargle some lemon juice.
  • Clean discolored utensils with a cloth dipped in lemon juice, then rinse with warm water.
  • Toss used lemons into your garbage disposal to help keep it clean and smelling fresh.
  • Use one part lemon juice and two parts salt to scour chinaware to its original luster.
  • A few drops of lemon juice in outdoor house-paint will keep insects away while you are painting.
  • Remove scratches on furniture by mixing equal parts of lemon juice and salad oil, then rubbing it on the scratches with a soft cloth.
  • To make furniture polish, mix one part lemon juice and two parts olive oil.
  • To clean the surface of white marble or ivory (such as piano keys), rub the item with half a lemon, or make a lemon juice and salt paste, then wipe with a clean, wet cloth.
  • To renew hardened paintbrushes, dip them in boiling lemon juice. Lower the heat and leave the brush for 15 minutes, then wash it in soapy water.
  • To remove dried paint from glass, apply hot lemon juice with a soft cloth. Leave until nearly dry, and then wipe off.
  • Rub kitchen and bathroom faucets with lemon peel. Then, wash and dry with a soft cloth to shine and remove spots.
  • Adding fresh lemon juice to rinse water removes soap film from the interiors of ovens and refrigerators.
  • Create your own air freshener: Slice some lemons, cover with water, and let simmer in a pot for about an hour. (This will also clean your aluminum pots!)
  • Fish or onion odor on your hands can be removed by rubbing them with fresh lemons.
  • To get odors out of wooden rolling pins, bowls, or cutting boards, rub them with a piece of lemon. Don’t rinse: The wood will absorb the lemon juice.
  • Save lemon and orange rinds to deter squirrels and cats from digging in the garden. Store rinds in the freezer during the winter, then bury them just under the surface of the garden periodically throughout the spring and summer.
  • After a shampoo, rinse your hair with lemon juice to make it shine. Mix the strained juice of a lemon in an eight-ounce glass of warm water.
  • Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice with two tablespoons of salt to make a rust-removing scrub.
  • Before you start to vacuum, put a few drops of lemon juice in the dust bag. It will make the house smell fresh.
  • Get grimy white cotton socks white again by boiling them in water with a slice of lemon.
  • Clean copper pots by cutting a lemon in half and rubbing the cut side with salt, until the salt sticks. Rub the lemon onto the metal, rinse with hot water, and polish dry.
  • Suck on a lemon to settle an upset stomach.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Take time out each day to focus on your own personal development -- read a book, watch a movie, learn something new, take a few pictures, or just sit in silence for a while.  Not matter what it is you choose to do with this time, be sure to use it in a positive way.  Get to know yourself, and you might discover things you never new were capable.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - PICTURING INSPIRATION

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
I once new a woman who the following quotes hanging on her wall in small picture frames.  She said, "Whenever I'm feeling down, I read these.  They cheer me up and keep me going."   I thought her idea of putting the quotes on her wall was inspiring... so I did the same.  The first quote listed on this post is hanging on my wall, too.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES OF THE DAY:

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - MENTAL EXERCISE

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Meditation can be one of the best forms of mental exercise available.  It can be done for spiritual reasons or just as a simple form of relaxation.  The following list is my own personal methods for meditation, as well as methods I've seen others perform with great success.  Your methods may differ from mine, however, I don't believe meditation can be performed wrong as long as one is thinking positive thoughts that are good for the soul.

1. Posture
You can sit in a chair, on your bed, on the sofa, or on the floor to meditate.  However, no matter where you choose to sit, you should take care to ensure your back is straight.  Surprisingly, when you slump, your mind drifts.  When your back is straight, a person tends to have more focus.  The idea behind straightening your back to meditate is to establish a sense of balance.

2. Eyes
You can choose to close your eyes, or leave them open, depending on the method which you're most comfortable.  Some people enjoy meditating while viewing pictures of landscapes, sea-scape, or cute animals to ease their mind.  Some enjoy meditating to soft music.  Still others enjoy silent meditation.  All of these methods are perfectly fine.  The purpose of meditation is to flow into a relaxed state-of-mind.  Whether you're more relaxed with your eyes open or closed is up to you.

** I once knew a woman who meditated to heavy metal music with her eyes closed and a wide smile on her face!  It worked wonders for her.

3. Focus
In the case of meditation, you'll want to clear your mind and ONLY focus on positive feelings and positive thoughts.  Don't let your mind wonder to how much money you have in your bank account, if you forgot to mark bread down on your grocery list, or how much time you have to yourself before your children come home from school.  The idea is to let go of daily thought and ONLY focus on pure emotion.  There are people who choose to focus on a religious figure to bring them a sense of peace while meditating.  If you choose to do this, that's perfectly fine.  Again, meditation is about establishing peace-of-mind, no matter what it is that brings you peace in a positive frame of thought.

4. Breathe
While meditating, it IS important to breathe deeply.  The reason for this is to bring more oxygen to your brain, which relaxes you more quickly.  Deep breathing also establishes focus for those who feel that they simply can't keep their mind from wondering while meditating.  Focusing on breathing can help with this, since it gives an active mind something to DO while meditating that's constructive to the cause.

5. Length of time
How long you want to meditate for is entirely up to you.  There's no time limit for meditation.  You can choose to take 3 minutes at any given point in the day to collect your thoughts, or you can choose to meditate for a hour in the forest.  Either way, it's important NOT to force yourself to meditate for any longer than you feel comfortable.  This will completely negate the purpose behind meditation, since forcing yourself to mediate for long periods of time when you don't wish to do so becomes a chore, rather than a choice.

6. Enjoyment
The most important point of all is to ENJOY your meditation sessions.  You can hold your sessions before you go to work, after you've returned home from class, after your children have gone to bed for the evening, or while your baby is taking an afternoon nap.  As long as you are enjoying your sessions, no matter how you choose to conduct them, you are meditating correctly.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOUS - BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND MOTIVATION

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Sometimes, a lack of confidence can come from neglecting what one already has, instead of appreciating it.  In other words, viewing life's triumphs in terms of what one wants to accomplish verse what's already been accomplished.  Past failures, bad breaks in life, and personal weaknesses can dominate a person's thinking, convincing them that if they try again, they are doomed to fail. Lack of confidence can be a motivation killer.

Of course, it's perfectly healthy to want to build yourself up as an individual and accomplish your own personal goals.  Perhaps you wish to become a doctor, or a teacher, or a historian --  or you may simply wish to work for yourself as a writer, an artist, or small business owner.  Either way, all life-goals take time, patients, trial-and-error, and a lot of motivational drive.  We all get depressed and lose our focus from time to time, but the key with highly successful people is their ability to move past failure, learn from it, and turn those failures into strengths.  Here are some tips that I've learned in life and have applied to my own goals.  I hope they will inspire you to succeed as well.

First, it's important to establish what your goals are and to follow-through with them.  For example, if you have it in your mind that you need to create four pieces of art to display at a gallery, you must motivate yourself to create those four pieces of art within the amount of time you've allotted yourself (or a prospective client has allotted).  So, you plan out your time, get your materials ready, and go to your studio to begin working on your project... then, your motivation falls flat.  You become overwhelmed by how much work you have to get done and how little time you actually have to do it.  You procrastinate as you think about all the other things you could be doing with your time at that moment: going to the beach, playing with your children, taking your dog for a walk.  You go out to get a cup of coffee, thinking that will perk you up and get you going.  Then, you pick up the paper on the way back to the studio and catch up on the latest news.  Then, you realize you've forgotten a very important bill that has to be paid and become flustered, so you return home to be sure the bill is paid because you can't get it off your mind.  Then, you look at the clock.  Before you know it, half the day is gone and you haven't started work at all.   This is your mind playing tricks on you and causing you to lose focus.  Focus is exactly what you need in order to gain motivation, and then confidence.

How do you do gain focus?

The answer isn't easy.  You have to decide what your own driving forces are.  In other words, what's the reason why you're doing what you're doing?  Do you want to earn a certain amount of money per week, per month, or per year.  Do you want to do something good for the world, like raise money for cancer research?  Do you want to make your children or parents proud of you?  Do you want to make yourself proud of you?  Once you have decided what your motivational factors are, you can start to build yourself up from there.  Your focus comes from wanting to achieve your goals because of your driving force more than wanting to procrastinate.  You won't put your goals on hold if you want to complete them badly enough, and for a good enough reason.

Next, you must get out of that old habit many of us have of speaking negatively to yourself.  I'm talking about that little voice inside your head that tells you, "You can't do this because....".   Are any of those reasons legitimate (such as financial or legal) or are the reasons something inside yourself that's saying, "I won't succeed, so I won't try"?  That's the type of thinking that must leave your mind, if you're ever going to get motivated and gain confidence in your abilities.

How do you get rid of negative thoughts?

Set some time aside to focus on all the good things you already have in your life, and how many successes you've already attained thus far.  You are a survivor.  No matter the circumstances, if you're reading this, chances are you've survived something in life in order to be where you are now.  Just being alive, in itself, is incredible.  Now, it's time to do something with that life.  Make a mental list of your strengths, your knowledge, and your abilities.  By making an effort to feel grateful for what you already have, you'll realize how competent and successful you already are.

This is the basis for meditation and self-inspiration; taking just a few minutes each day to breathe, relax, and remember the joys your life has brought you.  Failures don't have to be a weakness.  Think about the reasons why you failed at certain goals in life.  Were you told that you couldn't do it from an outside source: a friend, relative, or other individual?  Were you told that your work wasn't good enough by someone who enjoyed belittling others, but you received compliments from those who honestly loved your creations?  Did you not apply yourself to the tasks involved in completing your goals?  Did you simply give up because you fed into your own negative thoughts?  None of that matters anymore.  Realize where your failures were and learn from them.  Focus on how you can make yourself stronger in that area, so your failures become learning experiences, not additional reasons to assume all of your life efforts will always end in disaster.  When you truly believe that you deserve success, your mind will generate ways to achieve it.

Now, pick yourself up, gather your materials, and accomplish your goals for today -- just today.  It doesn't matter if you're a shut-in who hasn't seen the world outside your door in twenty years or if you're starting your first day of work as CEO of a large company.  If today is the day you plan to look outside your front door for the first time with new eyes - if even for one minute - go for it.  Put the failures of the past behind you, imagine yourself succeeding.... and step outside.

Even the hardest of goals are never accomplished over night.  Taking smaller steps to get to the larger ones, measuring each success along the way, and learning from your failures to become stronger, starts with your desire to simply move.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOUS - BIG CAT RESCUE

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Today, I'm focusing on promoting an amazing group of people and their efforts to rescue mistreated big cats.  "Big Cat Rescue" in Tampa, FL takes in abused, neglected, over-worked, and misused big cats from all across the country and gives them a permanent, loving sanctuary in which to live out the rest of their lives.  Unfortunately, many of these cats cannot be returned to the wild, due to varying circumstances (some were kept as pets, some secretly bred for their fur, and so on), so their keepers insure they receive as much of a rich and fulfilling life as possible.  Please consider a donation to this wonderful cause. No amount is too small and every penny counts.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOUS - WHY MEDITATE?

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Why meditate?

Meditation is a tool.  It can help a person combat stress, promotes physical health, helps with chronic pain, makes one sleep better, feel happier, and become a more peaceful individual overall.   As I've said once before, meditation isn't necessarily a religious practice and it doesn't require hours of your time.  The only thing anyone needs to do is breathe, take a step back in their mind (if even for a moment), and think about something good that you view as beautiful.  Give it a try

FUN FACT OF THE DAY:

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - WHAT'S BEAUTIFUL TO YOU?

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Take the time to notice the things you may not have noticed before that are beautiful to you.  Even the largest of cities can house breathtaking sights.  The city lights at night, a small sapling trying to push its way up through the pavement, the moon, the stars, the wind rustling the treetops -- it's all there if you take the time to look.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - DON'T FEED THE BEAST

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Meditation can take a few minutes to a few hours, the purpose however, remains the same in all cases - to clear your mind, reflect, relax, and enjoy the moment.  Make today count.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY:
A cat's body has between 230 bones and 250 bones, depending on the breed.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY:
THE TWO WOLVES - an old Cherokee story

A Cherokee elder was teaching his grandchildren about life.

He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me… it is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, hatefulness, and lies. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, humbleness, kindness, friendship, generosity, faith, and truth. This same fight is going on inside of you, and inside every other person, too.”

The children thought about it for a minute. Then one child asked his grandfather,“Which wolf will win?”

The Cherokee elder replied…

“The one you feed.”

From the first time I heard this story, several years ago, I've come to realize the truth in the words.  People have choices in the way they behave, act, perceive life, and perceive people.   Your choices shape who you are -- and who you will be in the future -- so act wisely.

INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL, HUMOROUS - HUMBLE PIE

PERSONAL THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Today, consider being humble and kind to others, rather than thinking of yourself or putting yourself on a pedestal.  Self-righteous pride is blinding.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY:
A shrimp's heart is in their head.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"It is peculiarly incumbent upon you who have strength to set a right example to others. I ask you to remember that you cannot retain your self-respect, if you are loose and foul of tongue; that a man who is to lead a clean and honorable life must inevitably suffer, if his speech likewise is not clean and honorable. Every man here knows the temptations that beset all of us in this world. At times, any man will slip. I do not expect perfection, but I do expect genuine and sincere effort toward being decent and cleanly in thought, in word, and in deed. As I said at the outset, I hail the work of this society as typifying one of those forces which tend to the betterment and uplifting of our social system. Our whole effort should be toward securing a combination of the strong qualities with those qualities which we term virtues. I expect you to be strong. I would not respect you if you were not. I do not expect you to lose one particle of your strength or courage by being decent. On the contrary, I should hope to see each man who is a member of this society, from his membership in it become all the fitter to do the rough work of the world; all the fitter to work in time of peace; and if, which may Heaven forbid, war should come, all the fitter to fight in time of war. I desire to see in this country the decent men strong and the strong men decent, and until we get that combination in good shape, we are not going to be, by any means, as successful as we should be. There is always a tendency among very young men and among boys who are not quite young men as yet to think that to be wicked is rather smart; to think it shows that they are men. Oh, how often you see some young fellow who boasts that he is going to “see life”, meaning by that, he is going to see that part of life, which a thousandfold, would better remain unseen!"  ~ An excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt's speech Strength and Decency
